Deep in the mountains of northern Thailand, the Karen (Korian) people live in harmony with nature, preserving their unique traditions and spiritual beliefs. During our visit to a Karen family, we had the opportunity to experience their warm hospitality and take part in their daily life. One of the highlights of our trip was visiting a local Buddhist monastery, where we observed sacred rituals and learned about the spiritual life of the village.

Arriving at the Karen Village

The journey to the Karen village took us through breathtaking landscapes, winding mountain roads, and lush green forests. Upon arrival, we were welcomed into a traditional wooden home and immediately felt the kindness and generosity of our hosts.

🏡 Life in a Karen Village

  • 🛖 Traditional Bamboo Houses – Elevated wooden homes with thatched roofs.
  • 🧵 Handwoven Textiles – Beautiful fabrics woven by Karen women.
  • 🌿 Self-Sufficient Living – Farming, herbal medicine, and local crafts.

Visiting a Buddhist Monastery

Many Karen villages have a local Buddhist monastery, where villagers come to pray, meditate, and make merit. Our hosts invited us to visit one of these serene places to experience the spiritual side of their culture.

🛕 What We Experienced at the Monastery

  • 🙏 Morning Almsgiving – Monks walked through the village collecting offerings from locals.
  • 🕯️ Temple Blessings – We received a monk’s blessing for good luck and peace.
  • 🛎️ Listening to Buddhist Chants – A calming and meditative experience inside the temple.
