Digital Nomad Reality: Internet Speeds and Workdays on Thailand’s Koh Chang Island

My workday as a freelancer during travel is well described in the post “4 Rules of a Freelancer: Work When You Want, Where You Want, How Much You Want, Wearing What You Want.” There’s little to add. The only difference is that I wrote the previous post while living in Germany, and this one from Thailand.

The main difference here is internet speeds. Finding good internet in Thailand isn’t easy. By “good,” I mean consistency more than speed. Regardless of what providers claim, speeds usually range from 10 kb/s to 300 kb/s for upload, and max 800 kb/s for download.

Internet interruptions from 1-2 minutes to an hour become more frequent as tourist season approaches. When the internet suddenly drops or slows, don’t stress – just take a walk along the Gulf of Siam. At night, when everyone’s asleep, the internet improves – perfect for uploading videos.

On Koh Chang, we found the best internet at “Oasis” resort, following Dmitry Smakotin’s footsteps. Highly recommended for all freelancers. It’s a beautiful workplace with internet suitable for work.

Working in nature is perfect for freelancers – both beneficial and enjoyable. Our Dutch friends Floris and Marieke, who traveled across Africa for 2 years in their jeep with their beloved dog, are also freelancers. They liked working at “Oasis” so much, they decided to buy it!

That’s the kind of decisions freelancers make… :) Now we’re thinking about which part of the planet to buy a resort in :)

In the next post, you’ll learn about the amazing people I was fortunate to meet at “Oasis” on Koh Chang, Thailand.

Traveler’s Tips: Cost of staying in a bungalow at “Oasis” resort: 250-500 baht (rubles) per night. Wi-Fi included. More info at: https://www.oasis-kohchang.com/ Cost of 1 hour internet at street internet cafes: average 120 baht (rubles). To check internet speed with Russia: https://internet.yandex.ru/

Remember, fellow digital nomads, adapting to local internet conditions is part of our lifestyle. Sometimes, a slow connection is just an excuse to enjoy the beautiful surroundings!

Share your own tips for working with unreliable internet. Many will be very grateful to you!
