Who hasn’t dreamed of stepping back in time, even just for a day, to the era of noble ladies and valiant knights? Immerse yourself in the romance of a knights’ tournament, a medieval fair, a concert of enchanting medieval music, archery, succulent roast suckling pig, and of course, delicious beer. Experience all this and more in a single day at the traditional German festival known as Ritterfest.
Ritterfest, or the Knights’ Festival, takes place throughout Germany at various times. In Potsdam, this captivating event was held at the magnificent Krongut Bornstedt – the Crown Estate, on September 3rd and 4th. As enthusiasts of medieval culture and festivities, my husband and I couldn’t miss this remarkable occasion. Let me take you through our unforgettable experience, step by step.
As avid proponents of a healthy lifestyle, long walks are one of our favorite pastimes. We never miss an opportunity to explore on foot, with distances of 5, 10, 15, or even 20 kilometers being typical for a weekend day. Today was no exception to our love for walking and discovering new sights.
On our way from our home in the Schlaatz district to the city center, we paused briefly before the impressive St. Nicholas Church, a landmark that always captivates our attention.
We headed to the heart of Potsdam, to the main pedestrian street Brandenburger Strasse, which leads to the Potsdam Brandenburg Gate (a smaller version of the Berlin Brandenburg Gate). It’s a charming little street with many small shops and cafes, and of course, we couldn’t resist stopping for a coffee at one of the cafes.
And naturally, we had some pastries too!
We fed the sparrows. They’re so chubby here…
After a short rest, we continued our journey to Sanssouci Park.

Tourists, tourists, and we feel almost like locals…
Of course, we couldn’t pass by the belvedere on Klausberg hill (belvedere means “beautiful view” in Italian). For just 2 euros per person, we climbed to the top to enjoy truly beautiful views of the entire Sanssouci Park.
There are 2 Belvederes in Potsdam. One in Sanssouci, and the second near Cecilienhof – Belvedere Palace. From its observation deck, you can even see Berlin on a clear day.
After enjoying once again the beauty of the park and Sanssouci Palace, we inadvertently reached Krongut Bornstedt – the crown estate. To get to the Crown Estate, you need to cross the park diagonally, past the windmill. Krongut Bornstedt is about 400 meters from Sanssouci Palace.
We bought tickets for the Ritterfest (Knight’s Festival). Entrance to the festival costs 6 silver guilders.
As soon as we entered the courtyard of the estate, we immediately plunged into an atmosphere from about 500 years ago.
Here, the photos will speak for themselves.
The blacksmith.
This is probably how medieval spinners looked :), with dreadlocks.
A medieval day wouldn’t be medieval without a knight’s tournament.
The fight was tough :), just like a real one…
Everyone survived
Shooting a bow turned out to be a terribly exciting activity. Out of 6 shots, 4 hit the target
The winemaking monks treated us to wine from their cellars
Delicious…
And this peasant speaks Russian well. He lived in Moscow for 12 years, studied at the University.
Medieval market.
And of course, what medieval day would be complete without roast pig, sauerkraut, and beer?
We didn’t manage to photograph the piglet whole. By the time we walked around the courtyard, it was already half eaten
Here’s such a lunch…
Buffel beer, brewed right here in the crown estate.
There are many craft museums and an old brewery on the grounds of the Crown Estate.
The brewery.
Can you imagine, this machine works :). I was very surprised. It’s noticeable.
It turned out to be a wonderful day.
If you ever visit Germany, be sure to attend a Ritterfest. This festival takes place throughout Germany at different times. I guarantee you’ll like it.
On the way back home, we photographed this signpost to the Crown Estate
I’d be happy to hear your comments:)
